Saturated compounds contain only single bonds; unsaturated compounds contain double or triple bonds. Unsaturated compounds decolourise bromine water.
Solution
Multiple bonds react with bromine by addition, removing its colour. Saturated compounds generally do not show this reaction under the same conditions.
